A short history of Eston
The name Eston comes from the Old English ēasttūn, meaning an eastern settlement. People have lived on the surrounding land since 2400 BC. In 1850 John Vaughan and John Marley found ironstone in the Eston Hills and a small farming settlement grew into a mining town. Steel from an industry that began with these mines went into the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From 1894 the area, apart from Ormesby, formed the Eston Urban District, which could have sought a charter as a municipal borough but did not. The mines closed in 1949 after a century of output. Teesside steelmaking was nationalised in 1967 as part of the British Steel Corporation, which became the Corus Group. The urban district ended in 1968 when the County Borough of Teesside was created. Of 16 listed buildings within a mile of the centre 15 are Grade II and the Manor House is Grade II*.
