A short history of Horden
The name Horden is Anglo-Saxon in origin, combining an old word meaning dirty with a term for a dene or valley. It is first recorded in the eleventh century as Horeden, when a place called Horetun, meaning a dirty farm, is also mentioned. In the early 17th century Sir John Conyers, 1st Baronet, who died in 1664, built the manor house known as Horden Hall. The settlement remained little more than a few farmhouses until work on Horden Colliery began in 1900. St Hilda's church opened in 1904 and is now the church hall. St Mary's church, put up by the local landowner Colonel Burdon, was consecrated in 1913 and is Grade II listed. By 1920 homes for miners had been built in rows named First to Thirteenth Streets. The colliery closed in 1987.
