A short history of Peterlee
Peterlee was founded as a new town under the New Towns Act 1946 and gained town status in 1948. The case for it was set out by C. W. Clarke, Surveyor to Easington Rural District Council, who suggested naming it after the Durham miners' leader Peter Lee. A deputation of mostly working miners asked the Minister of Town and Country Planning, Lewis Silkin, for a new town and he offered one for 30,000 residents. Peterlee Development Corporation was set up in 1948. Berthold Lubetkin's plan for tower blocks was rejected because mining had weakened the ground. He resigned in 1950 and the plan by George Grenfell Baines was accepted instead. The artist Victor Pasmore was then invited to lead the landscaping design. The town has two listed buildings, with the Apollo Pavilion graded II* and a scheduled monument at the medieval settlement of Yoden.

Peterlee & Horden Rugby Football Club plays rugby union and there are also Peterlee Cricket Club and Peterlee Town Bowls Club. Pitches and courts are mapped for sports including football, basketball, rugby league and tennis, with a number of football pitches among them. Wood House Park is the named park and Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve and Bracken Hill Wood Local Nature Reserve provide open green space, though some facilities lie just outside the area. Children's playgrounds are mapped in several places and a number of gyms are also available.
