A short history of Whitley Bay
Whitley was first recorded around 1100, when Henry I granted it to the Priory of Tynemouth and earlier documents spell the name in many ways, including Witelei and Whitlaw. A valuation of the priory's goods in 1292 gave the annual rents from Whitley as 20 shillings. In 1333 Richard de Emeldon, a mayor of Newcastle, held the manor as its lord and in 1345 Edward III licensed Gilbert de Whitley to add battlements to his manor house there. After the Dissolution the manor passed to the Crown and then, in 1551, to Dudley, Earl of Warwick. It stayed with the Percy family until 1632 and later came to the Duke of Somerset through his marriage in 1682. The line of ownership continues with the Dukes of Northumberland. Coalmining and limestone quarrying were the older industries. St Paul's Church was consecrated in 1864 and is among 15 Grade II listed buildings near the centre. The Whitley and Monkseaton Local Board was set up in 1873 and a railway line opened in 1882, helping Whitley develop as a seaside resort.
