A short history of Worcester
Worcester stood beside a ford on the River Severn on a trade route of Neolithic origin and by the 3rd century AD the Roman settlement was larger than the medieval city later became. The Hwicce chose it as their fort in 680 and a charter of about 691 gives the earliest definite form of its name, Weogorna civitas. In 1069 the Normans completed a castle south of the cathedral, of which nothing remains. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Wirecestre. As the sole crossing of the river between Gloucester and Bridgnorth, the town grew as a market centre and received a royal charter in 1189 after repeated fires. Cloth making became an important trade and the city became a county corporate in 1621. The Royal Worcester Porcelain Company followed in 1751 and glove making grew from the late 18th century. Of 681 listed buildings, 12 are Grade I, including the Cathedral Church of Christ and St Mary, Edgar Tower and The Old Palace.
