A short history of Woking
Woking was a place of religious and administrative importance well before the Norman Conquest. A letter of the early 8th century refers to a monastery there, a minster stood by 775 and by the mid to late 800s a royal vill was based on the settlement. Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Wochinges, with the king holding one part and two under-tenants of the Bishop of Exeter holding the rest. The entry lists two mills and a church and the settlement ranked among the largest fifth recorded nationally. The Crown held the manor until 1189 and it later passed to Margaret Beaufort and then to Henry VIII. The modern town dates from the mid-1860s, when the London Necropolis Company began selling surplus land around the railway station for development. Within 1.5 miles of the centre there are 55 listed buildings, of which Whitfield Court and the Church of St Mary the Virgin are Grade II*.
