A short history of Windsor
Windsor takes its name from Windlesora, first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and the closest reading of the name is a winch by the riverside. The older settlement, now Old Windsor, lay about 3 miles downstream. By 1070 William the Conqueror had a timber castle built on the present site. During the 12th century the community largely moved to New Windsor, which was planned with a parish church, marketplace and burgage plots. A hospital and a hermitage followed around 1160 and a Thames bridge in about 1173, while the castle was rebuilt in stone. Windsor received its first charter as a royal borough in 1277. Edward III's work on the castle between 1350 and 1368 brought wealth and workers to the town. In the late 15th century St George's Chapel was rebuilt as a royal mausoleum and drew many pilgrims. Within 0.9 miles of the centre stand 17 listed buildings, 5 of them Grade II* including The Limes and St Leonards Dale.
