A Bronze Age burial of the Beaker culture took place on Windmill Hill. Before the Norman Conquest the area often saw fighting between Britons, Danes and Saxons. Cockroad Wood Castle, a motte and bailey castle now in Charlton Musgrove parish, was probably built after 1066. The name Wincanton is first recorded in 1084 as Wincainietone and Wincautone while the Domesday Book of 1086 gives Wincaleton with 49 households. Walter of Douai held the land around the castle by then. The name comes from the Old English name of the River Cale combined with tūn, meaning an estate. A market was probably held in medieval times but the market and fair charter dates from 1556. The Wincanton Skirmish took place on 20 November 1688. Much of the town burned in 1707 and again in 1747. Early in the 1800s Wincanton housed French officers taken prisoner during the Napoleonic Wars.
