A short history of Whitnash
Whitnash has probably been settled since Celtic times and tradition places a Celtic fortification in Castle Hill Field just east of the town. The name is usually taken to come from Anglo-Saxon words for a white ash tree. The parish church of St Margaret has Anglo-Saxon origins and stands on a mound that may once have been a pagan site. The Domesday Book records the place as Witenas and by 1326 the name appeared as Whitenasshe. Half timbered buildings from the 17th century stand around the old village core, including the Plough and Harrow inn. Sir George Gilbert Scott drew up the designs for a major reconstruction of St Margaret's, carried out from 1855 to 1880. Whitnash stayed a small village for most of its history until rapid growth began in the second half of the 20th century. It became a town in 1978. Five Grade II listed buildings lie near the centre.
