A short history of Wem

The name Wem comes from the Old English wamm, meaning marsh. The area is believed to have been settled before the Roman conquest by the Cornovii. The Domesday Book of 1086 records four manors in the hundred of Hodnet held by William Pantulf, with 4 villagers, 8 smallholders and 2 slaves. The annual value to the lord was £2 in 1086 and up to £1 7s in 1066. In 1102 Pantulf supported Henry I against a rebellion. King John granted a market charter in 1202 and the market day was changed to Thursday in 1351. In 1410 the town was reported burnt by Welsh rebels. In 1483 the Duke of Buckingham fled to Shropshire after rebelling against Richard III and was betrayed by Ralph Bannister, then executed at Salisbury. Wem has 87 listed buildings.
