Empress Matilda fled here in 1141 and the Treaty of Wallingford ended the civil war in 1153. Henry II granted a Royal Charter in 1155. Plague arrived in 1343 and churches fell from eleven to four by the 15th century. In the Civil War the town held out under siege for 16 weeks before surrendering and Cromwell ordered the castle destroyed.
