A short history of Wadebridge
Wadebridge began as Wade, a crossing of the River Camel where a chapel stood on each bank so that travellers could pray before wading over and give thanks after. In 1312 Edward II granted a market and two annual fairs. A ferry later supplemented the ford and the vicar of Egloshayle, Thomas Lovibond, planned a bridge after many people and animals died crossing. Built between 1468 and 1485, it gave the town its present name. In 1646 Oliver Cromwell came to take the bridge during the Civil War. The Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway opened in 1834. The bridge was widened in 1853, 1952 and 1963. Of 24 listed buildings near the centre, Wadebridge Bridge is Grade II*.
