A short history of W1U

Marylebone was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as two manors, Lilestone and Tyburn, each with eight households. A woman named Ediva held Lilestone, which was worth 60 shillings, while Tyburn belonged to the nunnery of Barking Abbey and was worth 52 shillings. A parish served both manors from probably the twelfth century. A church called St Mary by the Bourne was built in 1400. Henry VIII obtained Tyburn in 1544 and enclosed its northern part as a deer park. Sir William Portman acquired most of Lilestone in 1554. The name took its present form in the 17th century. After John Holles bought the manor in 1710 a grid of streets around Cavendish Square was planned. The Marylebone Cricket Club formed in 1787. The area has 1245 listed buildings including 52 at Grade I such as 1-17 Ulster Terrace.
