A short history of Treorchy
Before industrialisation, most of the land around Treorchy belonged to one of the leading Glamorgan families and the area came under the Marquess of Bute Estate. Coal changed this and after 1851 the place became an industrial town. Abergorki Colliery, in Cwm Orci to the north, opened as a level in 1859 under a Mr Huxham, who had earlier managed the Bute Merthyr Colliery. J. H. Insole of Cymmer bought it in 1862. David Davies of Llandinam, later owner of the Ocean Coal Company, sank the first deep mine in the town during the 1860s. Building at first followed the main valley road but by 1875 streets were being laid out in a grid. Mining drove growth into the early 20th century and every local pit had closed by the close of that century. Five listed buildings stand within half a mile of the centre and the Park and Dare Workmen's Institute and Hall is the highest graded at Grade II*.
