A short history of Totnes
Totnes was fortified in 907 by King Edward the Elder as one of the burhs ringing Devon, replacing an earlier one at Halwell. The name is first recorded in 979 and joins an Old English personal name, Totta, to a word for headland. Sometime after the Norman Conquest of 1066 and before Domesday Book was compiled in 1086, the burh passed by royal gift from William the Conqueror to Juhel of Totnes, who probably built the original castle. He lost his lands in 1088 or 1089 after rebelling against William II. By the twelfth century Totnes was an important market town. A tax assessment of 1523 ranked it second richest in Devon. Edward VI's charter of 1553 let the former priory building serve as Guildhall and school. Oliver Cromwell visited in 1646. Of 308 listed buildings near the centre, six are Grade I, among them the Church of St Mary and the Castle.
