A short history of Tiptree
The Domesday Book of 1086 lists the area as wooded ground for pigs within the Great Forest of Essex. In the 1200s King John ordered the forest cleared and over 1,000 acres of wasteland later gained a reputation for smugglers, vagabonds and thieves. Early spellings include Tipentrie, Typpetre and Tiptre Heth and the name may mean Tippa's tree or may come from the Prior of Tipper. Tiptree became a parish only in 1934, with land from seven earlier parishes including Messing and Inworth. Major expansion followed in the 1990s and 2000s and a 1999 referendum rejected town status. Eleven listed buildings stand near the centre, all Grade II. In 2014 a trombonist's sneeze at St. Luke's Parish Church went viral online.
Sport and leisure
Florence Park is a sports centre for football and Atlantis is a sports centre with a gym and spa. Several football pitches lie in the area and the former site of Tiptree United Football Club is also recorded. There is a bowls facility too. Tiptree Pump Track serves cyclists and Tiptree Skatepark serves skateboarders. For open space, Grove Road Playing Field and Windmill Green are the named areas and a number of children's playgrounds are located around the town. Some of these facilities sit just outside the town centre.
