A short history of Thirsk
Archaeological finds point to settlement at Thirsk between 500 and 600 BC. The name comes from the Old Norse þresk, meaning fen or lake. The 1086 Domesday Book lists Tresche twice, in the Yarlestre wapentake, with ten households. Before the Norman invasion Orm and Thor shared the manor; afterwards it passed to Hugh son of Baldric and the Crown. Most of Thirsk went to Robert de Mowbray. Old Thirsk had a market charter and borough status by 1145. The Mowbrays' castle was destroyed by 1176 after a rebellion against Henry II. In 1215 William de Mowbray was among those charged with carrying out Magna Carta and in 1322 the Scots destroyed the manor house. Thirsk Hall, a Grade II* house, dates from 1720. The Church of St Mary is Grade I listed.
