A short history of Taunton

The name means a town on the River Tone. A Romano-British village stood near Holway and in Anglo-Saxon times Taunton was a burh with a mint. A monastery existed before 904, when the Bishops of Winchester, owners of the manor, obtained a charter freeing their townsmen from royal and county tribute. The place became a borough before Domesday and the county town about 1366. The Normans rebuilt the monastic site as Taunton Castle in the 12th century. Most of Perkin Warbeck's Cornish army surrendered to Henry VII here on 4 October 1497. Robert Blake defended the town in the siege of 1644 to 1645. The Duke of Monmouth crowned himself king here on 20 June 1685. Of 371 listed buildings nearby, six are Grade I, including Taunton Castle's inner court, Castle Bow and St Mary Magdalene church.
