A short history of Swaffham

The name Swaffham comes from Old English words meaning a settlement of the Swabians, some of whom presumably arrived with the Angles and Saxons. A sheep and wool trade had emerged by the 14th and 15th centuries and the resulting prosperity explains the large market place. George Walpole, 3rd Earl of Orford, presented the market cross to the town in 1783 with a statue of Ceres on top. Mathias Goggs designed the Corn Hall, completed in 1858. In the 1960s Harry Carter, art teacher at Hamond's Grammar School, was responsible for the carved town sign, which recalls the legendary Pedlar of Swaffham. A tornado struck on 23 November 1981. Of 102 listed buildings near the centre the Grade I ones are Swaffham Market Cross and the Church Of St Peter And St Paul while Oakleigh House and Manor House Including Attached Service Range To East are Grade II*.
