A short history of Swadlincote
The name Swadlincote comes from Old English words meaning the cottages of a man called Swartling. Earlier forms include Sivardingescote and Swartlincote. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded it as a small manor within the parish of Gresley, which it remained part of until the 19th century. Records of mineral extraction begin as the 13th century was closing. The area stayed rural until industry arrived in the 18th century. Coal and clay then brought collieries such as Granville Colliery as well as brickworks and potteries, which expanded until the Second World War. Emmanuel Church was consecrated in 1846 and finished in 1848 to a design by Henry Isaac Stevens. The Town Hall was completed in 1861 and a local board of health was formed in 1871. The Public Health Act 1875 created strong demand for locally made clay pipes. Nineteen listed buildings stand near the centre and Four Bottle Kilns at Greens Pottery is graded II*.
