A short history of Stroud
Stroud was originally part of Bisley and began to emerge as a separate parish in the 13th century. Its name comes from the Old English Strōd, meaning marshy land overgrown with brushwood and was applied to wet ground where the Slad Brook meets the River Frome. It was recorded as La Strode in 1221. A church stood by 1279 and the rectors of Bisley granted it parochial rights in 1304, a year often given as the town's foundation. Huguenots settled in the 17th century. The cloth trade made the town known for broadcloth and Stroudwater Scarlet uniforms. A significant Jewish presence followed in the 19th century with two synagogues by 1889. Lord John Russell sat as MP from 1837 to 1841. There are 324 listed buildings within a mile of the centre. The Church of All Saints is Grade I and 13 buildings are Grade II* including the Town Hall and Sunnyside.
