A short history of Steyning
Steyning dates from Anglo-Saxon times and its name may come from an Old English term for people living at a stony place. Æthelwulf of Wessex was buried in the church in 858. Edward the Confessor gave the minster and its manor lands to Fécamp Abbey, to take effect after Bishop Aelfwine died in 1047. Godwin expelled the monks in 1052 but William promised their return before invading. Domesday Book in 1086 records a port with a market, a royal mint and two churches. That year the king's court settled a dispute with William de Braose of Bramber over tolls and burials. Steyning sent two members to parliament from 1278. The Adur silted up in the 14th century and trade declined. Steyning Grammar School was founded in 1614. Charles Stewart Parnell married Kitty O'Shea here in 1891. There are 113 listed buildings nearby; the Grade I ones are the Parish Church of St Andrew and Brotherhood Hall.

A former rifle range is also in the area, though it is no longer used for shooting.
