A short history of Staplehurst

Staplehurst lies on the line of a Roman road. Its name comes from Old English words for a post or pillar and a wooded hill, possibly referring to a boundary marker where All Saints' Church now stands. The church is believed to date from the 12th century. The earliest written mention of the place is in a tax list of 1242. The settlement began as separate hamlets and farmsteads around local manors, which over time joined into one village. Loddenden Manor dates from the 16th century and is Grade II*, the highest grade among 14 listed buildings near the centre. The other 13 are Grade II. In the early 19th century invalids from Romney Marsh and East Kent visited to recover, apparently drawn by the clean air. In 1865 a railway crash occurred at Staplehurst. Charles Dickens was on board and was unhurt but remained affected by it for the rest of his life. In 2006 Elderden Farm became a focus of police investigations after the Securitas depot robbery.
