A short history of Stapleford

Stapleford has origins before the Norman Conquest. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Stapleford, spelt just as it is today. The name appears again in the Pipe Rolls of 1197 and means a river crossing identified by one or more posts. Its closeness to the River Trent and the River Erewash helped it become a trading point. Towards the end of the 18th century the area grew further as the stocking hose trade flourished across the Midlands. Original Stocking Knitters' Houses still stand on Nottingham Road. The main crossroads, The Roach, takes its name from La Roche, the term used when French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars were set to cut roads through rock. The Anglo Saxon Cross near the Church of St Helen is listed Grade I and the church Grade II*, among 18 listed buildings near the centre.
