A short history of St Neots

Traces of Iron Age settlement and a Roman encampment have turned up in the town centre. Eynesbury took its name from a local leader called Ernulf. Late in the tenth century a priory was set up just north of Eynesbury. The settlement that grew around it came to be called St Neots. It gained its own parish through a process that began after 1113 and finished in 1204. The priory was destroyed in the 16th century. In 1629 the Great Ouse was opened to boat traffic through the town. Eynesbury was absorbed into St Neots in 1876. Eaton Ford and Eaton Socon, previously in Bedfordshire, joined the urban district in 1965. Of 134 listed buildings nearby, the Church of St Mary is Grade I.
