Great House Farmhouse, just west of the village, dates from 1462 and was built from an earlier late medieval structure. It is listed at Grade II*, the highest grade among the 16 listed buildings near the centre, the other 15 being Grade II. By the early 19th century Southwater was mostly big estates let out as farms and mixed agriculture had earned money there for centuries. The railway opened in 1866 and, with the brick industry, supplied the workforce from which much of the population grew. At its height the brickworks produced 18 million bricks each year with a workforce of 100. Southwater bricks were reported to have gone into Christ's Hospital, Victoria Station, the RAAF Woomera Range Complex, London sewers and air raid shelters across London during the Second World War. After the brickworks closed the site was turned into a country park.
