A short history of Sidmouth

People have lived in the Sid valley since at least the Iron Age. Sidmouth belonged to the manor of Otterton and was given by Gytha Thorkelsdóttir to the Benedictines at Mont-Saint-Michel. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Sedemuda, meaning mouth of the Sid and it began as a fishing village. By the 1200s it was a market town with a parish church. In the Hundred Years' War it supplied two ships and 67 men to Edward III. Henry V moved the manor to Syon Abbey and Henry VIII later sold it, after which the Mainwaring baronets acquired it. A fort was built in 1628. Resort growth came in the Georgian and Victorian periods and the Duke of Kent stayed at Woolbrook Glen in 1819. Of 99 listed buildings nearby, Audley, Sidholme and Manstone Old House are Grade II*.
