A short history of Shrewsbury
Evidence of worship from before 2000 BC was found at Sutton Farm and a Roman roadside settlement stood at Meole Brace. Tradition places the town's founding in the 5th century as Uriconium declined. The name comes from Old English Scrobbesburh, meaning either Scrobb's fort or a fortified place in scrubland. In 778 Offa is said to have won Shrewsbury for Mercia and it was absorbed into England under Egbert early in the ninth century. Æthelflæd fortified it in 914. Early in the tenth century it had one moneyer. Roger de Montgomery, the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, founded the castle in 1074 and the abbey in 1083. Timber framing survives from the 15th and 16th centuries. Within 1.7 miles of the centre stand 780 listed buildings, 15 of them Grade I, including the Council House Gatehouse and Gateway, the Abbot's House, the Church of St Chad, the Lion Hotel and 71 to 73 Wyle Cop.
