A short history of Scunthorpe
A 1086 entry in the Domesday Book gives the name as Escumesthorpe, which comes from Old Norse and means the homestead of a man called Skuma. The site is believed to have stood near Market Hill in the centre of today's town. The town itself came into being after local ironstone began to be worked in 1859. Iron production started in 1864 and steel smelting in 1891, the year Scunthorpe became an urban district. Rowland Winn, the district's most significant landowner, held great influence over its social, political and cultural life. The town came to absorb the former villages of Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Frodingham, Crosby, Brumby and Ashby. In 1919 it merged as Scunthorpe, Brumby and Frodingham Urban District and in 1936 it became a municipal borough. Nineteen listed buildings stand 1.9 miles or less from the centre, with the Church of St Lawrence at Grade I and the Former Church of St John and Brumby Hall at Grade II*.
