A short history of Sawbridgeworth
The name comes from Old English Saebeorhtsworð, an enclosure owned by a man called Saebeorht. A church stood on the site of Great St Mary's in Saxon times. After the Battle of Hastings William the Conqueror granted the manor to Geoffrey de Mandeville. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded it as Sabrixteworde. Later manors grew from the de Mandeville holding and the de Says inherited the first, Sayesbury, in 1189. The present church dates from the 13th century. Ralph Jocelyn of Hyde Hall was twice Lord Mayor of London, in 1464 and 1476. Malting brought prosperity and in 1839 the maltsters George Fawbert and John Barnard founded a charity for local children's education. Sir Walter Lawrence acquired Great Hyde Hall in the 1920s and it became a school in 1945. Much of the town centre received conservation area status in 1968. Of 128 listed buildings nearby, only Great St Mary's holds Grade I.
