A short history of Saltburn-by-the-Sea

The name comes from the Old English saltburna, meaning salt stream. Old Saltburn, the original settlement in the gill, left few records of its beginnings, though smuggling was concentrated there and the publican John Andrew was known as king of smugglers. In the mid-18th century Laurence Sterne and John Hall-Stevenson raced chariots on the sands. By 1856 the hamlet comprised the Ship Inn and a line of dwellings lived in by farmers and fishermen. In 1858 Henry Pease imagined a town on the cliff. The Pease family then formed the Saltburn Improvement Company, bought land from the Earl of Zetland and commissioned the surveyor George Dickinson to lay out the streets. The Stockton & Darlington Railway reached Saltburn by 1861. Plots were sold to private developers who built mostly in Pease brick brought from Darlington. The Zetland Hotel had its own railway platform. Saltburn became a separate civil parish after 1894. Within 0.4 miles of the centre stand 13 listed buildings, 12 at Grade II and the War Memorial at Grade II*.
