A short history of Salisbury
A hillfort was built at Old Sarum between 600 and 300 BC and the Romans knew the place as Sorbiodūnum. It fell to Cynric of Wessex in 552. King Alfred later restored its fortifications because of the Viking invasions and the name Searoburg was recorded around the end of the 9th century. Sweyn Forkbeard sacked the settlement in 1003. A Norman castle stood by 1070, Herman became the first bishop in 1075 and the first cathedral was consecrated in 1092. In 1220 Richard Poore moved the cathedral to a new gridded town called New Sarum, on his estate near the meeting of the Nadder and the Avon. Work on the present cathedral began in 1221 and the town received a city charter in 1227. The spire clock was installed in 1386.
