It is first mentioned in 1300 as a fishing village. Most of it burnt down in 1377 during a French invasion. It was split into the farming hamlet of Upper Ryde and Lower Ryde. In 1782 many victims of HMS Royal George were washed ashore and buried where the Esplanade now lies. The pier opened in 1814 and Ryde Town Hall was completed in 1831. Upper and Lower Ryde merged in the 19th century as the resort grew.
