A short history of Ringwood

Ringwood appears in a charter of 961 as Rimecuda, when King Edgar gave 22 hides of land there to Abingdon Abbey. The second part of the name means wood and the first may mean border. Before 1066 Earl Tostig held the manor. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Rincvede, taken by the Crown with all but six hides absorbed into the New Forest and lists a watermill and a church. Henry III granted a weekly market in 1226 and the Earl of Salisbury received a yearly fair in 1337. The manor passed through many hands, including the Montagu earls from 1331 until 1541 and John Morant bought it in 1794. After Sedgemoor in 1685 the Duke of Monmouth was held at Monmouth House and Alice Lisle of Moyles Court was sentenced. The church was rebuilt in 1853 and the town hall followed in 1868. Fifty-three listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Meeting House and Manor House at Grade II*.
