A short history of Reigate

Evidence of people around Reigate runs from the Paleolithic through the Bronze Age and in Roman times tiles were produced in the Doods Road area. Domesday Book of 1086 records the settlement as Cherchefelle, held by William the Conqueror. It had two mills, land for 29 plough teams, 67 villagers and 11 smallholders and the manor paid £40 a year. Around 1090 the manor passed to William de Warenne and a timber castle followed, with stone walls added about a century later. The name Reigate first appears in the 1190s. An Augustinian priory was founded before the middle of the 13th century. A weekly market was running by 1279 and the Borough of Reigate was formed in 1295. After the Reformation the priory became a private residence. Railways in the mid-19th century brought expansion. The town has 109 listed buildings, with Reigate Priory the only one at Grade I and six at Grade II*.
