Bury New Road roughly follows a Roman road linking the forts at Mamucium and Bremetennacum and Roman coins have been found nearby. Robert held the manor in 1193 and the name was recorded as Prestwich in 1194, possibly from Old English words for a priest's farm. His son Adam held the manor in 1212 and the Langleys regained it after 1403. From 1561 it passed through the Reddish and Coke families until 1777, then to Peter Drinkwater in 1794. The village stocks stayed in use until 1800. Prestwich Hospital opened as an asylum in 1851 and the railway arrived in 1881, drawing Manchester merchants to build villas. Of 45 listed buildings nearby the Church of St Mary is Grade I.
