A short history of Pontarddulais

The name means "bridge over the Dulais", with the stream's name taken to mean black stream. The village grew around a road bridge over the River Loughor dating from the 14th century. A railway reached the town in 1839 and in 1843 rioters attacked the toll gate during the Rebecca Riots. A line to Swansea followed in 1866 and made the town an important junction. The settlement changed from rural to industrial, with workers arriving from as far as Italy. A new bridge was built in 1938 and the old one was demolished at the end of the Second World War. From 1950 newer works elsewhere made the local tinplate works obsolete. Four Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including Hope Independent Chapel and The War Memorial.
