A short history of Pickering

Pickering lay beside a glacial lake as the final ice age drew to a close, giving early settlers wood, stone, fish and fresh water. The name possibly comes from an Old English term for the people of Picer. The Domesday Book records enough ploughland for 47 ploughs along with meadows and extensive woodland. After 1066 the crown held the town and a castle and church were built. The Harrying of the North cut its value from £88 to £1. In 1267 Henry III gave the manor, castle and forest to his son Edmund. The estate later passed to the future Henry IV and the monarch has held it since. Parliamentary soldiers damaged the church and castle during the Civil War. Near the centre are 215 listed buildings, including the Grade I Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul and the Grade II* Beck Isle Museum.
