A market charter was granted in 972 and an 11th century chapel to St Cetta helped the town grow in the 12th century. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Oundle in Polebrook hundred with 36 households and a mill valued at £0.3 in 1066 and £11 in 1086. A grammar school existed by 1465 and Laxton Grammar School followed in 1556. Black Watch mutineers were caught at Ladywood in 1743 and the Old Town Hall was completed in 1830. Of the town's 165 listed buildings four are Grade I, among them the Parish Church of St Peter and The Talbot Hotel.
