Kilburn grew along Watling Street, an ancient route that the Romans paved. A priory of nuns was founded in 1134 at the stream crossing on that road and the name Kilburn was first recorded that year as Cuneburna. The manor name Brondesbury probably came from Brand, found in documents of about 1192 and 1215. The Red Lion is thought to date from 1444. A moated manor house stood at Brondesbury by 1538. The Bell Inn opened around 1600 and an iron-rich well found in 1714 led to gardens and a large room for visitors. Humphry Repton landscaped the manor grounds in 1789. Brondesbury became a chapelry in 1866 and Solomon Barnett developed much of Kilburn in the late 1800s. The area has 159 listed buildings including the Grade I Church of St Augustine.
