A short history of Nuneaton

Nuneaton began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement called Etone or Eaton, meaning a settlement by water, named for the River Anker. The Domesday Book lists Etone as a small farming settlement of around 150 people. Around 1155 Robert de Beaumont transferred his Etone estate to Fontevraud Abbey in France, which established a Benedictine nunnery. The place came to be called Nuneaton. Henry II issued a market charter around 1160 and it was reconfirmed in 1226. The nunnery closed in 1539 and fell into ruin. King Edward VI School was founded in 1552. Silk ribbon weaving took hold from the mid-17th century with help from French Huguenot immigrants. Griff Colliery saw the first recorded steam engine in Warwickshire in 1714. The Coventry Canal reached the town in 1769 and the railway in 1847. Cheap imports ended ribbon weaving after 1860. Of 24 listed buildings nearby the Church of St Nicolas is the only Grade I.
