A short history of North Hykeham

The name Hykeham may come from an Old English word meaning either Hica's village or a settlement linked to a small bird and the old village is said to go back to the Angles. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists North Hykeham with 15 households and a meadow of 52 acres, with Baldwin of Flanders as tenant-in-chief. A church appears in records from 1160. By 1535 it had become a free chapel and by 1700 it lay in ruins, after which the village had no church. Each of the two manors owned one of two ancient windmills and one of them, built of brick, formed part of Ladds Mill on what is now Mill Lane. All Saints Church was raised on a new site in 1868. A Methodist Chapel was built in 1881 and the first Parish Council was set up in 1894.
