The motte and bailey followed King Stephen's grant of local lands to Ranulf de Gernon, Earl of Chester and gave the town its name. Henry II issued a charter in 1173 and in 1235 Henry III made Newcastle a free borough. Parliament had two members for the town from 1355 until 1885. Of its 69 listed buildings four are Grade II*: the churches of St Giles, St Margaret and St George and the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity with its war memorial.
