A short history of Newbury
People lived at Newbury in the Mesolithic period. The town was founded late in the 11th century after the Norman conquest as a new borough, which explains its name. The Domesday Book of 1086 does not name it, though the borough is evident within the manor of Ulvritone. It was assessed with land for 12 ploughs and two mills, along with 11 villeins, 11 bordars and 51 enclosures worth 70s 7d. King John and Henry III visited to hunt and in 1312 Edward II ordered the bridge kept in good order. Cloth underpinned the economy, with Jack of Newbury active in the 16th century. The First Battle of Newbury was fought in 1643 at Wash Common and the Second in 1644 at Speen, after which Donnington Castle was left a ruin. The Kennet and Avon Canal route was finished in 1810 and the railway reached the town in 1847. The town has 258 listed buildings including three Grade I: the Parish Church of St Nicolas, Shaw House and the Museum.
