A short history of Newark-on-Trent
Newark may have Roman origins, as it stands on the Fosse Way. The name, meaning new fort, is first recorded as Newercha around 1054 to 1057. Stow Minster received the place in 1055 as a grant from Godiva and Leofric, the Earl of Mercia. Bishop Remigius de Fécamp raised a motte-and-bailey fortress in 1073. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists it as Newerche and notes burgesses living there. The Bishops of Lincoln held control from 1092 and King John died in Newark Castle in 1216. A flood swept away the Trent bridge in 1457. The Crown gained the town in 1547. Newark was a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War, endured three sieges and surrendered in 1646 on the King's order, after which the castle was largely destroyed. John Carr designed the Town Hall, completed in 1776. Grade I listings include Governor's House, the Town Hall, the Church of St Mary Magdalene and the castle remains.
