A short history of Nailsworth
Nailsworth began in ancient times as a settlement beside the Nailsworth Stream, where the Avening and Woodchester valleys meet. Medieval buildings in the surrounding area include Beverston Castle and Owlpen Manor. In the modern era the stream powered the mills that made Nailsworth a small mill town and brewing was also important there. In 1867 the building now called Nailsworth Town Hall was completed as a chapel for a dissenting congregation. That same year the town gained a rail link to the national network as the end of the Stonehouse and Nailsworth Railway line, a link that lasted until 1947. Near the centre stand 111 listed buildings, of which 103 are Grade II and eight are Grade II*. The Grade II* buildings include Spring Hill House, Egypt Mill, Egypt House, Stokes Croft, Bannut Tree Chapel and Bannut Tree House.
