A short history of Millom
The name Millom comes from the plural of an Old English word for mill. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Millom as one of the townships in the Manor of Hougun, which Tostig Godwinson, Earl of Northumbria, had held. In 1251 King Henry III granted a market charter to John de Huddleston, Lord of Millom. Millom Castle, which is grade I listed, was in poor condition by 1739. Until the 19th century Millom remained a small village gathered around Holy Trinity Church and the castle. A railway station opened in 1850 and iron ore mining at Hodbarrow began in the 1850s. The ironworks furnaces were completed in 1866, which led to the new town being built around them. The Hodbarrow Outer Barrier was completed in 1905. The mines and ironworks closed in 1968. Four Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
