A short history of Market Harborough
Saxon settlers founded Market Harborough as a small village, thought to have been called Hæfera-beorg. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded Bowden as a Royal Manor, with its people living in Great Bowden, Arden and Little Bowden. Harborough is named as a manor in 1199 and 1227, probably carved from that royal holding for tradesmen and a market beside a new road linking Northampton and Leicester. A market existed by 1204 and later gave the town its full name. The church steeple was built between 1300 and 1320 and the main church was finished in 1470. The Old Grammar School dates from 1614. In June 1645 Harborough became headquarters of the King's Army before the Battle of Naseby, after which its chapel held captured forces. Of 99 listed buildings nearby, the Old Grammar School and the Church of St Dionysius are Grade I.
