A short history of Maidenhead

A Mesolithic site at Moor Farm in Holyport is a scheduled monument and Roman villa sites lie at Cox Green and Castle Hill by the Camlet Way. The name comes from the Maiden Hythe, a wharf built as early as Saxon times. In 870 Danes landed at the wharf and ferry crossing before fighting their way overland to Reading. Domesday Book records the settlement as Ellington in the hundred of Beynhurst. Around 1280 a wooden bridge replaced the ferry and the main road was diverted over it, so the town developed into a port on the river and a centre for markets. The name Maidenhythe is first recorded in 1296. In 1649 the Greyhound Inn was where Charles I saw his children for a final time. The Great Western Railway later prompted expansion. Of 95 listed buildings nearby, Grade I examples include Ockwells Manor with its stables and gatehouse and dovecote, Jesus Hospital and Maidenhead Bridge.
