A short history of Lymington

The earliest settlement in the Lymington area centred on the Iron Age hill fort at Buckland Rings, dated to around the 6th century BC. The town's origins lie in an Anglo-Saxon village that Jutes from the Isle of Wight named Limentun. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Lentune. Around 1200 William de Redvers, who held the manor, founded the borough of New Lymington near the present quay and High Street. He issued the earliest charter and permitted a market. Salt-making along the coast continued from the Middle Ages into the 19th century. Lymington became a parliamentary borough in 1585. Shipbuilding flourished from the early 19th century, with Thomas Inman building the schooner Alarm, which competed against the yacht America in 1851. The Roman Catholic church of Our Lady of Mercy and Saint Joseph was built in 1859 to a design by Joseph Hansom. The area has 211 listed buildings, eleven of them Grade II* including Monmouth House, Bellevue House and the Parish Church of St Thomas the Apostle.
